Most people I know who abuse alcohol or other substances really want to answer the big question of “why” they do it.

The answer is multi-faceted, and honestly, I don’t think any of us will ever uncover all the roots of our alcohol abuse. Certain things will have to remain in our “I don’t understand it” file. But we can uncover some clues.

We are not stupid. There are pro’s to drinking, along with con’s to drinking. There are also pro’s and con’s to “stopping drinking” too.

We’ll be diving in to the Cost Benefits Analysis technique of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) today, and using it to uncover some of our “why’s.” This tool can be used in a few ways – you can keep it with you, similar to the Push/Pull list, so that you always see the pro’s and con’s right in front of you before you ever drink again. You can also use this tool to uncover some relapse warning signs and skillsets you need to learn – we’ll be exploring those nuances tomorrow.
